I saw Jessica Valenti speak tonight about her new book, The Purity Myth: How America's Obsession With Virginity is Hurting Young Women. She is elegant, intelligent, extremely funny and down to earth.
Most of the time when I read a feminist, or any issue-specific book or blog really, I appreciate it and agree or disagree, but never really take anything away from it that I didn't know before. This was not the case tonight. I left understanding that I am not a bad person for not "saving myself" and that "The Purity Myth" is just as degrading as the latest Maxim spread. A person's value does not come from their bodies - their virginity - whether they have it or they don't, whether they are abstaining or fucking everything that walks.
Basically, she is a badass. She has like two Masters Degrees, has written three books and proves that feminists can be just as beautiful and personable as the next girl.
