How I Manage My Time | Blogging, Freelancing, & Working

If you're on this blog, you probably already know a little bit about me, but if not... I graduated college a year ago, I've been freelancing for the past three, I manage a YouTube channel and a blog, and I work full-time doing what I love. Needless to say, I've got a lot going on. Story sound familiar? Studies show I'm not alone, so keep reading for tips.

Up until this past year, I'd never considered myself an organized person... at all. I'm pretty messy, a little impulsive, and very creative. But I manage my multiple roles pretty efficiently and most importantly, I'm happy. I thought getting a more traditional job would mean that I had to give up freelancing, blogging, or both, but I've slowly gotten into my groove and figured out how to make it work. It's easier than it seems. Really!

Write everything down.

When you're managing a zillion different things at once, it's easy for things to slip your mind. I always used to be a 'mental note taker' until recently. Now, I'm never seen without a pen and at least a scrap of paper. I do best physically writing things down, but when I'm in a pinch, I use the notes app on my iPhone a ton, as well as Evernote.

Schedule, schedule, schedule.

My friends and family know that I do not do last minute plans. My days are planned weeks in advance, my YouTube videos are filmed in batches, and my social content all gets scheduled on Sunday nights. Taking an hour each Sunday to plan ahead saves me tons of late nights or early mornings, and penciling in social engagements as soon as possible allows me to function like a normal human by planning ahead and working a little more in the days leading up.

Use your commute.

This is another recent change for me. Getting a car with Bluetooth was one of the best things I've done in awhile, and even though I love music, using the 20 minutes I spend sitting in traffic on the phone with a colleague, client, or listening to a business Podcast is so much more valuable. I typically reserve my mornings for rocking out and take calls as soon as I'm done with my day job.

Don't overcommit.

If you're going to manage multiple careers, you need to give 100% at each. It's not fair to anyone involved if you're only working halfway. And frankly, that defeats the purpose of the side hustle. Let your clients, employer, friends, partner, etc. know exactly how much time you have to give, exactly how flexible you are, and exactly what is a priority in your life. So long as you're up front about your commitments from the beginning, everyone should be happy and should know what to expect.

Pace yourself.

I'm the biggest hypocrite right now, considering it's Tuesday night and I'm typing this up at 1am... But for the most part, I try very hard to sleep enough, eat well, take mind breaks (aka binge watch reality TV at least once a week), and of course, spend copious amounts of time with the people I love. Since I'm in social media, one of the hardest things for me is turning off my phone or computer, but it's totally necessary sometimes. Even though you may feel like you're missing out on tons of opportunities by taking a day off, the truth is the happier and better rested you are, the more successful your business, career, and relationships will be, too.

And before you ask, "Why do you work so much, LJ?"... Let me tell you.

First, I love what I do and I simply cannot decide between structured office work and freelance life. I love them both and I'm incredibly passionate about each of the companies I'm a part of. And secondly, and probably more importantly, I'm in my hustling prime right now. If you're getting ready to graduate and are under the impression that working a single full-time job will get you where you want to be in life, then I might just tell you that your dreams aren't big enough. Don't get me wrong, some people get lucky, and I hope to slow down in the next few years... but now is the time to take risks. Now is the time to work a little too much. Now is the time to get serious about life.
